Obituary of
Mrs. Ada O. Smith
Ada O. Smith, the eighth of ten siblings born to the late George and Ada Hooks Smith, was born in Johnston County on December 29, 1918. After graduating from Richard B. Harrison High School, she entered Fayetteville State University earning her BS degree and becoming a teacher. There was no doubt in her mind that she chose the right profession. No other profession brought her the rewards and joy she got from working with boys and girls and a desire to lend a helping hand regardless of the task. She taught for 42 years in the Johnston County School system. She was honored as First Runner-Up as Teacher of the Year in Johnston County in 1983 which was a great accomplishment.
She was also a faithful member of First Missionary Baptist Church in Selma and served in many capacities for the glory of God. Ada had a heart of gold and would go beyond the call of duty to give care to all who needed her skills and services. Mrs. Smith was a very docile, warm, and caring individual. She had a charming smile and a pleasing, soothing, melodic voice that captivated her audience. She was neat, exacting, meticulous, and precise in whatever task she performed. She has earned the love and respect of our fellowship.
Ada served as Worthy Matron of her Eastern Star Chapter, Number 53. She was also a member of the Progressive Women's Club, the Johnston County Citizens Association, Fayetteville State Alumni Association, Democratic Women's Club, and the Retired Teacher's Association.
She was married to the late James Smith, Jr. Living to cherish her memory are her son, Michael A. Smith, MD, daughter-in-law Beverly Alston Smith, MD, two sister-in laws Annie Ruth Smith and Frances Smith, one brother-in-law Everett Smith and a host of special nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
