Billy Earl Pettiway was born on January 16, 1952 in Selma NC. He departed this life on January 25, 2023. He was preceded in death by his parents Herman "June" and Louise Pettiway, and brother Jessie Prince.
"Bill", as family called him, was mostly known for his quiet but friendly demeanor. However, if YOU spoke first, he would reciprocate a greeting or conversation. That said, he always greeted everyone with a wide smile. Underneath his quiet demeanor was a river of knowledge and insight. He often engaged in conversation about current world events, history, and religion sharing with his family information he had just read or heard on the news.
His favorite mind exercise was trying to beat the computer at a game of chess, which he could easily do for hours. He would share nuggets of sage wisdom, but only if solicited. His advice would always be brief, direct, and end with, "But that's me, it's your life. Do what's best for you." He believed that everything you needed to get on and stay on the right path for you, was already there. You only needed to trust yourself.
What he lacked in words, he demonstrated indeed. Over the years his love was exemplified in his actions. He was an extraordinary provider and stability was one of his greatest gifts to his family. That gift allowed his family to have experiences of which he only dreamed. His family was secure in knowing they would always have everything they needed and there would always be a home to return to. Together with Cecelia, they built a home filled with God, love, laughter, and safety. They nurtured their children's wings until they could fly on their own.
He leaves to cherish his memory his loving and devoted wife of 45 years, Cecelia "Tan", and his three children Tomeka Oates, Shiwanda Leonard (Tracey), and Derrell Pettiway. Four grandchildren Brielle and Bailey Leonard and Kadeeja and Andrieka Oates. Mother-in-Love Cecelia "Mama" Laney. Six siblings James Prince (Doris), Gayle George (Kenneth), Ronnie, Johnny, Timothy, and Jimmy. One aunt, Josephine Pettiway, beloved brothers- and sisters-in-law, a host of nieces and nephews, and his granddog Jordan who was a faithful companion
