Earl Thomas Chance was born February 10, 1934 to the late Johnnie and Esther (Taylor) Chance in Parmele, North Carolina.
On Friday, August 24, 2018 an angel of mercy was dispatched by God to summon Mr. Chance to eternal rest. He was prepared and ready.
Earl was reared and nurtured in a Christian home. At an early age, his faith was confessed in the Lord and Savior Jesus the Christ, and he began his spiritual walk; attending Noble Street Baptist Church in Portsmouth, Virginia.
His formal education began at Salisbury School in Hassell, North Carolina. The family relocated to Portsmouth, Virginia; where he attended the Douglass Park Elementary School. After graduation from Norfolk County High School in June 1952, he was destined for the United States Air Force. He served his country for twelve years. After leaving the military he was employed by Goddard Space Center as a Computer Operator. During his tenure with Goddard he attended The District of Columbia University where he studied psychology. Earl was an avid Washington Redskins fan and a lover of Jazz music.
Although he was small in stature, he processed great strength and love for family and friends. Earl will be missed for his compassionate spirit and giving ways. In his spare time, he enjoyed reading, photography, writing poetry and spending quality time with the family. He was an active member of Saint Peters Episcopal Church until his health declined.
Earl was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret Chance.
He leaves a legacy of love to his son, Patrick Earl Chance; a devoted daughter-in-law, Tara; a granddaughter, Brittany Danielle Waterson; a grandson, Joshua Patrick Chance; a great-grandson, Nakiyan Lamar Anderson; two great-granddaughters, Za'Niyah Saray Anderson and Maesyn Brielle Kelly; two sisters, Jacqueline C. Close of Portsmouth, Virginia, and Marion L. Chance-Roberts (Bennie) of Woodbridge, Virginia, a brother, Johnnie L. Chance (Janice) of Tallahassee, Florida, a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
