Gladys Tomlinson Dublin is the daughter of the late Frederick Douglas Tomlinson and the late Millie Judkins Tomlinson. She is the widow of David William Dublin Sr. and mother of Linda Dublin Levy, David Dublin Jr., and Braxton Lee Dublin. Her grandchildren are Corey Stewart, Leola (Dublin) MacMillan, PhD, Larence Dublin, Tchad Dublin, Braxton Farrington, Lt. Commander Joseph Hines, PhD, and Shannon Hines (deceased). She received her high school diploma from Johnston County Training School, Smithfield NC., and her B.S. degree in Nursing from the Katie Bitting Reynolds School of Nursing in Winston-Salem, NC.
After graduation, Gladys moved to New York City, landing her first nursing job at St. Joseph Hospital in Brooklyn. After marrying David Dublin Sr., they established a home in Arlington, VA. There she started nursing, first at The Emergency Hospital, and later at The Washington Hospital Center (both in Washington, DC), where she became a head nurse. She later became a staff nurse at The National Orthopedic Hospital, Arlington, VA. After moving back to Smithfield she was a nurse at Johnston Memorial Hospital (now Johnston Health) and ended her nursing career at Day By Day Alcohol and Drug Center, while in her 80's.
Gladys grew up in the First Missionary Church of Smithfield, NC. In Arlington, she was baptized and became a member of the Seventh Day Pentecostal Church of the Living God, in Washington, DC. She did the Lord's Work there for over twenty years, well loved and respected as one of the mothers of the church. Her duties at the church included treasurer, Sabbath School teacher, church superintendent, and church clerk.
In her Arlington neighborhood, she was also well known and loved, helping many, young and old, by volunteering and supporting the community. She was unofficial neighborhood nurse, mother, counselor, and social worker. She raised her children in the church, ensuring their spiritual growth and knowledge. She could often be found at their schools, helping, encouraging their educational growth and knowledge, and that of other children.
Gladys and husband David moved backed to their hometown of Smithfield, NC in the early 80's. There she joined Gethsemane Seventh Day Adventist Church, Raleigh, NC. Later she joined with Adventists from Smithfield and helped establish Smithfield First Seventh Day Adventist Church.
Her favorite mottos are, "Do what you can for the Lord without complaining, because there is a crown waiting for you if you endure to the end.", and "Let your light shine for Jesus."
Declining health and age caused to give up some of her favorite pastimes, bowling (with a wall full of trophies spanning 40 years), volunteering with Meals On Wheels, water aerobics classes, and several others. After staying at home with increasing difficulty of coping with Alzheimer's/dementia, the family agreed that she would be safer and better cared for in an assisted living facility. She quickly became known as "Nurse Gladys" and even had a chair at the nurses station with her own clipboard. "For over two years, she was well loved and well cared forâ¦
