John Roger Murdock

John Murdock passed away on December 29, 2023. He was born on May 4, 1947, in Mahopac, NY, to Roger and Harriet Murdock. John is survived by his wife, Susan Murdock; his daughter, Christina (Derrick) Daye; his son, Daniel (Michele) Murdock; his grandchildren, Crishawna Bradshaw, Derrick Daye, Jr., Deshawn Daye, Sedona Murdock, and Scarlett Murdock; his great-granddaughter, Phoenix Bradshaw; his sister, Holly (Walter) Austin; his brother, Joseph (Tammy) Murdock, and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. He was predeceased by his sister, Jean (Mariann) Murdock.

John worked for many decades at Con Edison in Westchester County, NY. Upon his retirement, he and Susan moved to the Catskill Mountains, where John earned his certificate of forestry from the Cornell Cooperative Extension. He spent a good deal of his retirement in his favorite place – the woods - where he hiked, planted trees, and made friends with local wildlife.He shared his love of nature freely and happily, leaving his children and grandchildren with precious memories of hiking with him in his woods, fishing in his pond, and learning the name of every tree, flower or shrub that caught his eye. 

John also volunteered his time, from being a costumed mascot at a Catskill ski resort to pouring gallons of coffee at the annual Shaver Hill Farm pancake breakfast fundraiser. He was an engaged community member whose quiet, practical manner and sharp sense of humor will be remembered by friends and family. John was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, mentor, and friend, and he will be greatly missed by everyone who knew him.
