1 SGT Retired Leamon Luther Parker of Fayetteville, NC, was born to the late Herman and Rachel Parker, on December 20, 1940, in Johnston County. He was called home on July, 14, 2009 at Duke Medical Center, Durham, NC.
He attended William Mason Cooper School in Clayton, NC and graduated from Johnston Central High School in Smithfield, NC.
In 1959 he began serving his country in the United States Army, in which he received the following acheivements. (1960) Basic Airborne, (1962) Div. Air Trans, (1964) Jungle Warfare Training, (1969) Jumpmaster, (1969) Supply School, (1970) Publication Ckse, (1970) NCO Acad Grad, (1971) 15c case, (1989) Adv. Skills Expert M-16 Rifle/National Defense Service Medal/Army Commendation Medal 1st OLC/Good Conduct Medal 9th Award/Combat Infantry Badge/Vietnam Service Medal Campaign Medal/Vietnam Service Medal with five years of service stars/Vietnam Service Medal Cross of Gallantry with Palm/Bronze Star Medal/Master Parachitist Badge/Armed forces expeditionary Medal - Dom Rep/Four Overseas Service Bars/Army Svc Ribbon/Overseas Service Ribbon with two years Meritorious Unit Commendation/Army Achievement Medal/NCO Professional Development Ribbon with one year Meritorious Service Medal/Presendtial Unit Commendation 3rd OLC.
In 1987 he retired from the military and began teaching Military Science (ROTC) at Burke High School in Charleston, SC for a period of 15 years.
He leaves a legacy of love to his wife, Nellie Gray Parker of the home; two daughters, Velvet L. Parker of Stuttgart, Germany, Penny J. Peacock of Raleigh, NC; two sons, Reginald M (Keisha) Barnes of Four Oaks, NC, Roger D. Barnes of Asheboro, NC; goddaughter, Bianca Foye of Selma, NC; three brothers, Chief Petty Officer Retired James T. (Ethyle)Parker, SGT. Major Retired Elmer E.(Lois) Parker of Springfield, NC, Retired Government Kermit L. (Joyce) Parker of Oxes Hill, MD; four sister in laws, Eloise (Bill) Brown of New York, Adell (Lee) Redfern, MD, Katie McCuller of Greensboro, NC Diane Foye of Selma, NC; fourteen grandchildren; seven great grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
Funeral Services for Mr. Parker will be held Saturday, July 25, 2009 at 1:00 pm at St. Peter's Church of Christ in Smithfield, NC.
