Matthew Needham Sherrod, Jr., 73, was born at Saint Agnes Hospital in Raleigh, NC to Matthew Needham Sherrod, Sr. and Mary Elouise Heartley Sherrod. He peacefully transitioned to paradise on February 26, 2022 at home. He was the third child with two older sisters, Maxine (deceased), Sherry Ann Sherrod Dupree (Herbert) of Gainesville, Fl., and Jerry Allen Sherrod Sr., (deceased) of Selma, N.C. He was preceded in death by his parents, two siblings (Maxine Sherrod; Jerry Sherrod), two daughters, (Tammy Sherrod; Nicole Sherrod, several aunts, uncles, and cousins. A graduate of William Cooper High School, Clayton, NC in 1967, he went on to North Carolina Central University to study Sociology and earned his bachelor's degree in 1971. He also went through basic training in the U. S. Army and served in the National Guard Armory Reserves from 1972 to 1992. He also worked for the N.C. Department of Corrections as a case analyst from 1972 to 2002 with a career he truly loved to do. He also served on the Town of Selma Board of Adjustment in the 1970's. When he was not working, he was a devout soldier for the Lord at First Missionary Baptist Church in Selma, N.C. where he went on to be ordained as a deacon and trustee in June of 1991. He served as Sunday School Superintendent from 1990-1995; He also served as chairman of the deacon board at First Missionary Baptist Church from 1995 until his transition. He is survived by his wife, Selma Sherrod, and daughter, Tonya Sherrod; a sister Sherry Ann Dupree (Herbert) of Gainesville, Florida. Cousins: Jeraldine Camper of Delaware; Carolyn McClendon of Maryland; Alfred Heartley (Beverly)of Atlanta, Georgia; Clara Jackson of Pennsylvania. Nephews: Jerry A. Sherrod, Jr.(Anna) of Dunn, NC; Andre Dupree of Orlando, Florida; two great nephews and one great niece
