Melvin Hooks

June 8, 1940 — June 22, 2018

Melvin Hooks Jr entered this life on the 8th day of June in the year of our Lord 1940. He was born to C.J. Hooks & Ardell Davis in Smith-field, North Carolina. After a short bout with cancer, Melvin was called to final rest Friday, June 22nd, 2018 at home in Four Oaks, North Caro-lina. He was the second child of seven.
Raised and educated in North Carolina, Melvin matriculated throughout the Johnston County School System and received his High School Diploma in Kings County, New York.
By the providence of God, he met Rebecca Wilson, and was joined in Holy Matrimony. Their son, Nathan, completed this wonder-fully blessed union.
Melvin worked as a Bus Driver for the Manhattan / Bronx Surface line in New York City, retiring after 32 years of service. Throughout his career, Melvin's main focus was on the children of the community in which he worked always brightening the hopes and dreams of each young person he wholeheartedly served.
Melvin was very caring and dedicated to his family as well, in giving his time and advice to all who would listen. He spent his entire life help-ing others in any way he could and would always encourage, young and old, to take an interest in some activity ( I don't know why hunting and fishing comes to mind...Lol), and with all of his knowledge and prepar-edness about survival, it brings to mind what his nephew Vincent Jr would always say, "Dad, if there was an Zombie Apocalypse, I'm head-ing for Uncle Melvin's house because he's ready." Further, as I think about it, Vincent spoke the truth…Melvin was truly ready for all earthly dangers, a modern day Daniel Boone!!! Melvin spent most of his early years in Oakey Grove Baptist Church, under the direction of Reverend Roger Brodie, and his latter years with Tabernacle of Joy Baptist Church in Uniondale, NY under the direction of Reverend Raymond Mackey, where he became a Dea-con, and received Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior, and has now been called from labor to rest.
Through the pain, the last days of his life were comforted by the countless hours he spent with many loved ones, and enhanced by a sur-prise 78th Birthday party. His final hours he cherished with the pres-ence of his Beautiful wife, sisters and cousin Beverly.
Melvin was preceded in death by his father, C.J., his mother, Ardell and his brother, Bobby.
Melvin is survived by his wife, Rebecca; his son, Nathan (Sandra); three sisters, Elizabeth, Rena Pearl, and Linda; two brothers, Jesse and Frenchie; sisters in law, Shirley, Carol, Deletora and Audrey; brothers in law, Earl, James, Dereck and Vincent; grandson, Aykeith; granddaughters, Tawana (Blaine), April, and Nkenge; five great grand-sons; three great Granddaughters; three great-great grandsons; one great-great granddaughter and a host of nieces, nephews, family and friends.
