Rufus Roger "Boot" Howard, age 74, of Cheverly, MD died peacefuly after a long and courageous battle with cancer at Washington DC VA Medical Center on Friday, April 10, 2009.
Rufus was born on May 15, 1934 in Smithfield, NC to the late William E. "Chick" Howard and Ella Baker Howard. He attended Johnston Central Training School. He served his country in the United States Marine Corps during the Korean War.
Rufus was well-loved and adored by his family. He was a wonderful father, grandfather, brother and uncle. He loved his family and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, William E. "Chick" Howard and Ella Baker Howard, two brothers, William E. Howard, Jr. and Jimmy Howard and one sister, Juanita Howard Stewart.
Rufus Roger "Boot" Howard is survived by daughters Robin Joynes (Oscar) of the home; Genita Copeland, Atlanta, GA, Sharon Anderson and Debora Dorsey (Ernest), both of Smithfield, NC; three sons, Roger Craig Howard (Claudia), Charlotte, NC, Gary Howard (Tina), Greensboro, NC and Douglas Howard (Celestine), Raleigh, NC and 12 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild; 3 sisters, Ora Howard Battle, Ervington, NJ, Virginia Howard, Newark, NJ, Brenda Howard Rowland, Upper Marlboro, MD, and 2 brothers, Roland Howard, College Park, GA and Ken Howard, Washington DC; loving nieces, nephews, cousins, and a number of beloved friends.
A memorial service will be held at Quantico National Cemetery, Triangle, VA on Friday, May 15, 2009 at 11:00am.
