Veronica Sanders, the beloved daughter of Julia Mae and
Robert Lawrence Sanders, was born December 12, 1957, in
Smithfield, North Carolina. She departed this life on
November 11th, 2024, at the UNC Health Johnston hospital
in Smithfield, North Carolina.
Veronica, affectionately known as “Punkin,” was a talented
artist. People often admired her beautiful pastel pencil
drawings. She especially loved fantasy art. She loved family
gatherings and eating spicy foods: Chicken, red hots,
chitterlings, fatback (cracklings), beef dishes, collard greens,
crabs, and most soul food items. If she enjoyed the food,
she would say this is good, say your name, and utter umph
umph.
Veronica attended public schools in Smithfield, North
Carolina, and Washington, DC. She graduated from Spingarn
High School in Washington, DC in 1977.
Veronica leaves to love and cherish her memory her two
daughters, Toi and Tara Sanders; one Sister, Myralon Joyce
Simmons; one brother-in-law, Colonel Joseph Jacob
Simmons IV; two nieces, Karon Edmonds, and Jaloni
Sanders; two nephews, Joseph Jacob Simmons V and
Jonathan Thomas Simmons; one Aunt, Betty Sanders; 12
cousins; and a host of relatives, friends, and neighbors.
Prayer for the Faithful Departed
O Loving Father, Source of all life, please accompany Your

never-ending love. Amen
